SURJ Toronto Childminding Collective
Please fill out this form to request childminding from us. We'll get back to you as soon as we can!
At least 5 days notice is ideal for us to gather volunteer childminders and supplies. However, we want to accommodate all requests and will try our best to do so.
ABOUT THE SURJ CHILDMINDING COLLECTIVE
As part of SURJ Toronto’s ongoing work to support the activism and organizing of Black, Indigenous and racialized people in Toronto, we are rejuvenating our Childminding Collective! Our goal is to directly support organizers in the city by holding down childminding at regular meetings, events and small-scale actions.
WHAT WE DO
Childminding is distinct from childcare or babysitting. Our volunteer childminders will hang out with kids while their parents and caregivers engage in nearby activism and organizing. We’ll bring fun games, crafts and toys. We'll happily offer childminding for kids 1+ in age.
WHAT WE DON'T DO
We won’t do diaper changes, offer food, or engage in any form of discipline. Parents and caregivers need to be nearby - we will not offer childminding for events like marches or large demonstrations.
BECOME A CHILDMINDER
Join the Childminding Collective by attending one of our monthly training sessions on Zoom. At the training, you will learn more about the Childminding Collective including our approach to childminding and labour redistribution, what we do and don’t do when it comes to hanging out with kids, fun games and activities to engage in and the process for getting you connected when childminding requests come in. No previous experience with kids or childminding is necessary!
We hope that by providing childminding at these events we can support increased accessibility for parents and caregivers, and expand the racial justice movement!
